Wan Hai Lines has replaced old container stacking equipment in its terminal at Ohi pier #5 in Tokyo port, citing growing congestion due to higher traffic.
The Taiwanese liner operator said that it had launched three new stackers on 28 June, and introduced new stacker equipment and a reservation system for containers.
“Overall cargo volume in Tokyo port has continued to grow in recent years, and the traffic congestion around the port has become more and more serious,” said Wan Hai.
Last year, the Taiwan-based carrier developed and introduced a reservation system, being the only terminal that provides such a service in Tokyo. Through the examination of shipping data, the containers can be reserved, reducing the waiting time for truck drivers to turn over the boxes.
In order to avoid congestion, Wan Hai also provides dedicated lanes on the periphery of the terminal so that trucks picking up reserved containers can enter the container yard first, effectively dispersing peak traffic demand, and improving the efficiency of the terminal.
