The government of China’s Fujian province has decided to open three container berths in Xiamen Port to foreign trade.

The provincial government said that berths 4 to 6 in the Songyu sub-port, owned by Xiamen Haitong Terminals, will be accessible to foreign container trade.

A notice said, “Berths 4 to 6 in the Songyu port area of Xiamen Port are accessible to 20,000 TEU ships, and are connected to the shoreline of Berths 1 to 3 in the same port area. These are among the important container terminals in Xiamen Port. The port is key to embracing the global trend of ships becoming larger. Our strategy of ‘big ship and big port’, is conducive to boosting Xiamen as a container hub port, international shipping centre and a national logistics hub.”

Since 1 January 2016, Xiamen Container Terminal Group, a subsidiary of Xiamen International Port, which operates most of the container terminals in Xiamen, has been operating the berths.

Xiamen was ranked the 13th busiest container port in 2020, after handling 11.41 million TEU that year, up from 11.12 million TEU in 2019. During the year, the port tested the navigation of 23,000 TEU ships to show that it could handle large vessels.
