Taiwan-listed Evergreen Marine has ordered a series of eleven 24,000 teu LNG dual-fuel containerships split between Chinese and Korean yards.
Five of the vessels will be constructed by China’s Guangzhou Shipyard International and the other six will be built by South Korea’s Hanwha Ocean, priced between $265m and $295m each.
Delivery date of the containerships has not confirmed yet.
The latest orders see Evergreen shifting from methanol dual-fuel to LNG. While LNG is still a fossil fuel there are growing concerns about the availability of green methanol in the coming years.
In 2023 Evergreen Marine ordered twenty-four 16,000 teu methanol dual-fuel containerships at Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) and Nihon Shipyard at a cost of around $196m each. At the time it was the largest order ever placed at SHI with the 16 vessels contracted at the Korean yard worth a total of $3.11 billion.
